How do I get started using Twilio for SMS notifications?

SMS Delivery Notifications require you to setup a Twilio account and enter your account details in your Innovo Customer Portal.

Start by setting up an account at https://www.twilio.com. You can start a 7-day trial, but in order to test and use SMS with Delivery notifications you will need to buy a phone number from them. When signing up, select the "Not a developer" option.

Register on their site, verify your email address, then verify your phone number. You'll then need to fill out a page on what you want to do with Twilio. Set it like this:

Once you fill that out and press the Get Started with Twilio, go to Develop on the left, expand phone numbers and go to Buy a number:

Search for a number somewhat local to your branch(es) and buy one. They are typically $1.15/month. Check with Twilio for current pricing. You need to have a purchased number as you cannot use a trial account number. After you have bought a number you will enter that number, along with your Account SID and Auth Token in Deliver Web's Notifications>SMS Settings page. You can get your Twilio Account SID and Auth token by going to Accounts at the top-right of Twilio and selecting the API Keys and Tokens page. Make sure you use the SID and Token from the "Live credentials" box on that page.

Once you have the phone number, auth token, and account SID from the Accounts>API Keys and Tokens page in Twilio, you add them to your Innovo Portal's Deliver Web>SMS Settings page:

There is a test feature in the Portal you can use to confirm that your Twilio account is sending SMS notifications. We recommend making sure you can successfully send notifications with our test feature before moving forward to set up Customer's to get SMS notifications.  Details on that are in the SMS section of our Getting started with Notifications: Create your Deliver Notification Templates support article.

Additional Twilio Setup Information

Direct Brand Standard and Low-Volume Standard Registration

Once you have purchased your phone number and have the Twilio configuration completed in the Innovo Customer Portal, make sure to:

Creating a Twilio Primary Business Profile

First gather the necessary information for your A2P 10DLC registration. Twilio has details and the most current list here.

Business Information

You will need information such as your legal business name and address, business type, company status, stock ticker and exchange for public companies, tax ID (EIN number for US businesses), industry, website, and regions of operations. For most, your business identity should be Direct Customer.

Point(s) of Contact

You will need to provide an email address for notifications from Twilio. You can use an email distribution list if you want to notify multiple users. Then specify at least one authorized representative's name, email address, business title, phone number, and job position.

Use your US entity Tax ID or International Tax ID when registering your business profile. Twilio does not accept DUNS numbers. For Standard and Low-Volume Standard registrations have your EIN for US companies, or another form of official Tax ID for non-US companies.

To create the Business Profile in Twilio's Trust Hub, navigate to the Twilio Console > Messaging > Regulatory Compliance > Onboarding page.

Select whether your company is located in the US and/or Canada, and whether your business has a tax ID. Click Save and Continue when you have completed the form. On the review page, make sure the information is accurate and then click the Submit for Review button.

Register Your US A2P Brand

Next you can register your business profile for A2P 10DLC capabilities by creating a US A2P brand. Most customers select the Low Volume Standard brand which is sufficient if you send fewer than 6,000 message segments per day. Fill out the fields as appropriate, check the box agreeing to the one-time registration fee, and then click the Register button.

The screen will show that the A2P brand registration is in progress, and usually within a few minutes the process completes and if successful, the screen will automatically update to a Registered status. If the registration fails, check Twilio's troubleshooting guide for more information.

Registering a Campaign

Once your brand is registered, click the Continue button and then click the Register A2P Campaign link on the lower-left.

Enter your A2P brand name, and select from the Available A2P Campaign use cases. We selected Delivery Notifications, and opted to Create New Messaging service:

Next, fill out the campaign description and samples. If you are including the tracking URL then click the box for including embedded links. Then fill out the box describing how end-users consent to receive messages. You can copy our verbiage if applicable:

"We send out an email communication to all customers letting them know about our campaign and if they are interested to receive text messages, they can email us their phone number and opt-in."

Review the information and when satisfied, click Create to submit the form. You will receive a prompt to confirm your registration. Click the Confirm button.

After confirming, the screen will show the campaign registration is in progress. This process may take several days to several weeks, and you will be notified via email of the result.
