How do I setup the Zebra Printer?

Download Zebra Printer Utilities and Install in Windows

Note: The printer can only be paired with one device at a time. If the printer is/was previously paired to another device, it MUST be unpaired (forgotten) from that device in order to pair with a new device.

Setup the Printer Using the Zebra Setup Utilities

Plug the printer into the Windows machine via USB cable

Launch the Zebra utility

On the Zebra Setup Utilities window, if the printer is not listed in the window, click Refresh Printer List. When the printer appears, select it and then click on Configure Printer Settings to launch the Printer Settings Wizard

When screenshots differ, the QLn420 screenshots are on the left and QLn320 / ZQ620 screenshots are on the right

On the Label Parameters screen, set the Width to 3 and the Height to 1 and click next. The width on the QLn320 will auto-adjust to 2.89 and the ZQ620 auto-adjusts to 2.83. Both of those can be left at the default.

On the Speed and Darkness screen, accept the defaults and press Next

On the Media screen, set the Media Type to Gap Sense and press Finish

You will be taken back to the Zebra Setup Utilities window, click on Configure Printer Connectivity

On the Connectivity Type screen, Select Bluetooth and click Next

On the Bluetooth Settings Screen set the following:

  • Check Enabled (Should be checked by default)
  • Friendly Name: Zebra
  • Discoverable: On (Should be the Default)
  • Minimum Security Mode: 1 (Should be the Default)
  • Authentication Pin: Blank (Should be the Default)
  • Bonding: On (Should be the Default)

Press Next

On the Final Stream window, click Next

On the Send Data window, select Printer, then click Finish.

The printer should restart automatically, but if it does not, restart the printer manually.

This configuration works well with the Zebra 10026369-R Barcode Label, which are gap sense labels. If you purchase bar sense labels, please adjust the settings accordingly.

Changing the Printer Timeout

By default, the printer will turn itself off after 20 minutes of inactivity. You can change that to a longer or shorter period of time by following the instructions below.

First, download the "Zebra Direct Communication Set Timeout.txt" file and save it in your Documents Folder.

Open the Zebra Setup Utilities and click on Open Communication With Printer.

Select the Open File icon and select the "Zebra Direct Communication Set Timeout.txt" file downloaded above. You should see two command lines appear in the window at the top.

The value in quotes "3600" in the first command line represents the time, in seconds, before the printer will automatically shut off. Our default value of "3600" is 1 hour. If you would prefer a different amount time, you can change the value in the command line to the desired amount of time, in seconds.

Press Send To Printer

If you do not see "3600 Seconds"* (second image) appear in the bottom window after a few seconds, press Send to Printer a second time.

*If you changed the number of seconds, what appears in the bottom window should match what you set.

Close out of the Direct Communication window by clicking the red X in the upper right corner. If you have made changes to the timeout value, select Yes when prompted to save changes, then close out of the Zebra Setup Utility.
